The most interesting thing about the movie I thought was the stereotypes represented in the movie. The stereotypes are about the North and the South. Some of the South stereotypes I heard were shitkickers, you can't understand them, they are all criminals, it's very hot, they will bite your toes, and you get poisoned there. The North ones were that they were stuck up, and worked to death, the South couldn't understand them, and citylickers. I thought these were interesting because Italy is not that big and yet these people believe so heavily about the stereotypes. Even though they could take a quick trip to the other side and see that they are not true. It is also weird to me that they take the stereotypes so extreme to the point it becomes a fear. The ones I observed that are actually true is that they both use different dialects of Italian so they can't understand each other. The North is not as close with their family as the South, the South drinks a lot of coffee, and the North eats more fast food compared to the South which eats a lot of big meals.
I think the movie did a good job at comedy. I could see how some people could get offended because they take the stereotypes so extreme, and the main character pretends to be disabled. However, I think they make fun of both sides equally so it's not just one side taking all the heat. I also think it was very culturally educational. It explained very well the divide in Italy between the north and the south, and it also explained their stereotypes really well. It was very educational on which stereotypes were to and to what extreme. It was also a lot more interesting than just a documentary would have been on Italy.
I really enjoyed the subplots of the movie too. It was really funny how the South could take a joke even tho Alberto was very offensive in the beginning towards them, and also how his friends from the south played into the lie he told his wife. I also thought the comment that people cry when they visit the south and cry when they leave was a good way to explain the movie. Alberto was so sad when he had to go, but when he finally opened up his eyes to the culture he realized how amazing it was. And he cried when he left because of all the relationships he was able to make there and how beautiful it was.
