Benvenuti al Sud Review - Meadow Gray

This was my second time watching this film and it still has the same charm and funniness as it did the first time. The aspect I enjoyed most about the film is the memorability of the characters from the South and how the South was portrayed throughout the film. As a non-Italaian watching this film, I found myself more drawn to the south of Italy rather than the north. I believe I was more drawn to the South due to its close-knit community where everyone knows one another and work is seen as more of a second thought compared to all the other responsibilities as a citizen. In class today we discussed how different American society is compared to Italy and more specifically south Italy. We concluded that America is so much more isolated and non-reliant on community. Bringing this idea back to the movie it seems that Alberto is used to the north where there is more isolation and not many daily interactions with people outside of the family. The film ends on a very positive note showing Alberto’s family leaving for Milan but a lot of things have changed about their family, the most change being that they have become a part of Castellabate and assimilated to their culture with open arms. The ending shows a message surrounding the plausibility that stereotypes should not be taken to the point of fear and reluctance when interacting between cultures.  This message can be applied beyond Italian culture as the film lays out a broader issue we face around the world. The film smartly points this out by using humor to hyperbolize the very real stereotypes that play an intricate role in Italian Culture.
