Benvenuti al Sud - Mae Crosby

Benvenuti al Sud was a great comedy in my opinion. I think it really highlights how much stereotypes have an impact on people and how easily people believe them. Alberto heard all these bad things about the south and dreaded going there. When he first arrived, even though what he saw was real, it was definitely dramatized to try to play off on the stereotype that southern Italy is a bad and dangerous place. I also believe that he was harsh with his employees and the other residents of the city because he believed that they were going to do bad to him instead of waiting and finding out who their true selves were.

I liked Mattia’s quote when he said “When a foreigner comes to the South, he cries twice: when he arrives, and when he departs.” Because of all of the stereotypes the foreigner hears about Southern Italy, he cries because he doesn’t want to be there. However, after he has found out that those stereotypes are incorrect and that the people there are nice and welcoming, he cries because he doesn’t want to leave and/or the people there have become very meaningful to him.

I feel like if there were to be anyone offended by stereotypes, it would be the people in the North. If not offended, I think they should be embarrassed with how they think about the southerners with no regard as to how they might appear to the southerners and everyone else. They appeared snobbish and stuck up just by the way they work, socialize, and classify the south. The northerners might be offended and think, “We aren’t like that. We respect the southerners just the same.” But I don’t think anyone from the south would be offended by this film. If anything, I think they would find it funny as well.

I really appreciate the relationship that Alberto and Mattia have. Although they aren’t always on the same page, and Alberto has some authority over him, Alberto is always there to help him and give him advice, and I feel like Mattia is there to keep him on his toes and just to have fun and feel welcomed. I do think they get stuck in situations but they go about them similarly, such as not needing to be upfront with someone until they absolutely have to be.
