One thing that stood out to me in the film is the character development of Matteo. In the beginning, Matteo is only focused on school and is seen as a little odd by others. In situations where Matteo's temper gets the best of him, he is seen lashing out at Giorgia and leaving his exam when the professor disagrees. These types of scenes lead to him joining the army, and the theme that everything happens for a reason is vividly shown. After failing the exam and losing Giorgia, he felt he had nowhere to go besides the army. The army gave Matteo a direction in life and molded him into the man he is at the end of scene 1. The life that Matteo chose for himself by joining the army shows the impact one single decision can have on the rest of your life. On the other hand, seeing the path Nicola takes, you can see how he ends up becoming the man he is through his journey. His decision to head to Norway and to seek another life. Where he meets new people and gets a whole different perspective on life. His journey ends up coming full circle by bringing him back home to Italy and becoming a part of the rebellion. Although these two lived completely different lives, and are complete opposites, they still have a bond of brotherhood that connects them. Matteo is not able to connect with Giulia, in the same way that he can connect with Nicola because they are not family. Matteo and Nicola can balance each other out, and no matter how different they become, they still will have a connection of being family.
In part two, the character of Giorgia is reintroduced back into the brother's lives. Yesterday when watching the film, when Giorgia is taken away from the police she was never brought up again. I was confused about the purpose of the plotline with Giorgia. However, when she is found in the asylum, her purpose in the movie becomes more clear. Every time Giorgia is in the film, she can bring Matteo and Nicola back together. They can reflect on their history of trying to help Giorgia. More vividly shown, even through all of the brutal treatment that Giorgia has endured throughout the years, it is clear that there is a special connection between Matteo and Giorgia. A connection that is unique to only Matteo and Giorgia. In their conversation, it may seem that Giorgia is empty and completely nonverbal. Until Matteo asks the questions about how he was back in the day. Giorgia's response "Mad Mad" which shows she is still able to remember their time together. This also shows that throughout the years Matteo is still always angry and still lashing out on others. In addition, I believe this is a pivotal scene for Matteo to change in future scenes. Although this interaction with Giorgia is not the only factor in Matteo's possible change in attitude, I think it will cause him to look in the mirror. Throughout the movie, Matteo is always getting worked up and has a lot of built-up anger stemming from different places in his life. However, I think that in the next part of this movie, Matteo will start to realize and better control his anger, and it will allow him to better succeed in life and as a person.
Another thing that stood out to me during the movie was where Matteo was mentally in his life. Matteo's anger is shown throughout the film where he is constantly lashing out at family, friends, and co-workers. When looking at this I just expected Matteo to change. I blamed his short temper and anger issues on a lack of maturity and just waited for the moment in Matteo's life to flip the switch. I predicted that Matteo would need to fall and love, and have a child to change. Which in the end he was able to fall in love (which he felt he ruined, but did not really), but did not live long enough to meet his son. I feel that when Mirella comes into the movie, although she was just a short part of his life, they are still able to have a deeper intimate relationship for the first time. I think their connection starts as soon as they meet and they can connect through photography, but it was built off of a lie. I believe that Matteo told Mirella his name was Nicola because, at this point in his, he was not happy with who he was. He had just moved to Sicily after he got fired, his father was now sick, and he was not in the best shape when it came to a relationship with his family. Although he originally told her that his name was Nicola the first time they met, when they met again years later he did not need to keep lying about his name and job. It shows that he was still scared to let someone close to his life because he knew he would ruin it, or he felt that she would leave if she knew the real him. I think ultimately after he pushed her out of his life, that was the breaking point because he felt she was the last person that cared about him. After the death of Matteo, Mirella gives birth to a son. The fact that Matteo's family and Mirella were able to connect, brought more closer to the family as it helped with their grieving. When Nicola brings his mother to meet Mirella and Andrea, she starts to cry because of how much she sees Matteo in Andrea. I ultimately believe that was the deciding factor in her staying on the island. She was able to build a relationship with her grandson, and she saw Andrea as a second chance at a new relationship with "Matteo" since he was gone.
