Best of Youth Part 1 - Marwa Aarab

"Best of Youth" perfectly pictures different hardships that youth faced in Italy back in the 90s. The use of full shots, high angles and POV shots intensified the ways different characters interact with one another. The movie delved deeper into intricate matters such as authority and the students' protest in Torino in 1698 which will forever remain engraved in Italy's history. Moreover, the film depicts different personalities by using a lot of expressionism and showcasing family ties that also gives the audience a concrete idea about the cultural framework in Italy. On one hand, Matteo is portrayed as a very expressionist character who doesn't necessarily know how to navigate his emotions and thin thoroughly before acting or engaging in any sort of commitment, that can also be shown through his different interactions with Giorgia and even his own brother Nicola. On the other hand, Nicola was very optimistic and knew exactly how to tackle different hurdles that came up throughout the first part of the movie.

The film simultaneously portrayed 2 brothers who led completely different lives, one chose to join the Army as soon as he couldn't protect Giorgia and felt like he didn't have an reason to further his education in University and so, he eagerly was looking for some order and purpose in his life. In contrast, Nicola wanted to free himself and live somewhere where he could contribute positively and help people around him. In essence, Nicola and Matteo both want the good for people around them in both humanitarian and authoritarian ways. The first part of the movie explored complex themes in order to give the audience further insights about Italy's culture : family ties (specifically brotherhood) - expressionism - authority and freedom of speech.  Additionally, there were more insights about Nicola than Matteo as he's been present in many scenes exploring his interests and molding his character. However, Matteo is only shown as an irritated man who doesn't know how to control his emotions and always let them take over. Also, the presence of Giulia gave another perspective as she is free spirited and doesn't want to obey to any authority and this is clearly pictured in her first encounter with Matteo. The presence of different characters showcased the crucial significance that culture plays in Italy. Despite facing numerous setbacks and arguments, each and every character looked after one another. Thus, highlighting the core values embedded in this country.
