Best of Youth, Part 2 - Marwa Aarab

The second part of the film delves deeper into the different factors that bond the characters. The use of imagery and a strong dialogue seamlessly conveys the beliefs upheld throughout the movie. As Nicola wanted to have an intimate moment with Giulia, the camera zooms in on a French poster "Seule la lutte paie, continuous le combat" which highlights the continuous quest for freedom and how only fighting for it will have a significant outcome. "Best of Youth" also showcases the different paths that Nicola and Matteo chose and how they affected their global outlook and immediate relationships. On one hand, Nicola had his daughter Sarah and focused solely on balancing parenthood and his career as a psychiatrist while Matteo moves to Sicily and reconnects with Giorgia which further pushes him to question himself and the way he tackles different hurdles. Moreover, the audience gets more insights about other characters including the father, Sara and Giulia. Correlating back to the authoritarian aspect of the film, Nicola is portrayed as a man who has adapted his lifestyle to Giulia's. However, he seems to do so to an extent as he let her go as soon as she explicitly showed that she prioritizes freedom over anything else which brings us back to the significance that family ties hold in this culture.

Furthermore, the use of POV, long and zoom in shots emphasized an array of emotions expressed throughout the film which a heavy emphasis on scenes where themes like freedom, family and authority come up. In addition to that, the director's aim to show how Nicola and Matteo progressed throughout the film perfectly aligns with the imagery included in it. Matteo's use of a camera perhaps highlights a sense of stability and order he's seeking to accomplish in his life as he doesn't limit himself to the limitations of a mere picture but rather look for the "soul" and a certain meaning behind it. Another relevant them brought in the move was mental illness and how it is deemed as a deficiency rather than an abundance of emotions that are not usually easy to navigate. Giorgia is the perfect example depicting this as she tends to ignore what's happening around her and keep it all to herself and so does Matteo. A possible turning point in the movie would be the death of the father and how Matteo's reconnection with Giulia might influence his life.
