Best of youth- part 2 and 3 - Corinne Nicholas

As we watch the second part of the film, the characters become easier to understand regardless on who the viewer is. Matteo for example is one of them. What I mean is he is pretty consistent throughout the film. He is easily agitated, angry, lashes out at anyone and everyone, and puts his hands on those he shouldn't. Although he has had character growth, he still is the same underlying guy. Yes he can now talk to women better than before, and has calmed down when talking to Giorgia, but with his brother and other men around him, he is still aggressive. There is no clear backstory as to why Matteo is this way, it could be a number of different reasons, either way we can see his lack of sympathy towards people around him when they question what he says or what he is doing. When Matteo and Nicola's dad dies, Matteo reacts angrily, in doing so demonstrates his continuous lack of emotional control. Matteo may have felt on the outs of his family for years, so when he saw his father in a completely helpless state and heard about his mother helping his friend behind his back, he became upset. Giulia on the other hand was not as predictable from the beginning to now. At first she was playful, happy, and enjoying her passions. At some point she becomes agitated easily too, especially at Nicola. Nicola, just like he would towards his bother, brushes her actions off and tries to calm her down. She was a difficult character to understand when she first started acting distant, but as the movie progresses, her actions become predictable as well. Giulia comments to Nicola's mother about how Giulia herself was not fit to raise Sara, so when Giulia walks out on Nicola and Sara, it isn't much of a surprise. Nicola had put his best foot forward with her but even with all his efforts she still walked out.  Even if the viewer is not angry like Matteo, or restless like Giulia, their actions are still understandable because of our knowledge on their past behavior.

Through the film there are reoccurring events that cause parallels to other parts in the movie. The behavior shown by the characters over and over again demonstrates the theme that the human state is a fragile and unstable one. Matteo and Giulia, as I have written about before, are two big examples. Matteo changes his mind many times and becomes angry very easily. Every time he becomes like this it shows how unstable he is in his life to get so angry over little problems. Matteo pushes people away and doesn't express his emotions in a healthy way, causing his fragile state of mind. The biggest sign he was fragile was when he called the only person he felt he could open up to but ended up killing himself because she didn't answer. A stable person trying to repair a relationship would try to call again or meet her in person, but he didn't. Giulia was also fragile and unstable. She was in a committed relationship with a man who loved her and yet still decided to leave. She left behind both Nicola and her daughter Sara even though she knew she loved them both. It was a hard decision but every time she saw them or tried to get in touch, she was fragile and didn't want to bother them even if Nicola and Sara didn't see her as a bother. She made rash decisions like getting new passports, holding a gun when her neighbor knocked on the door, and constantly running away trying to find who she is and what she is doing her job for. Giorgia, even though she is already mentally ill, arguably shows more stability than both Giulia or Matteo. Many characters show similar aspects to demonstrate unstable human conditions, but hide it better than others.
