I Cento Passi- Ella Ohrvall

The first thing I wanted to talk about was the movie title, 100 Steps. This could represent multiple things, the first way I was thinking was that it's 100 steps from Peppino's home to Tanos. This represents how close the problem is to his home and how involved his family is. The problem is this close and they can see how to solve it. Another way I interpreted the title was that there are 100 things you need to do to fully shut down the Mafia, but it's impossible for one person to do all 100 steps. Peppino tried, he made the radio Aut, went on protests, and even got kicked out of his home. But it was never enough, realistically the biggest impact he made was his death. It proved his point about the mafia. The last way I interpreted the title was after Peppino's death there was a protest with his casket. They were taking those first 100 steps against the mafia and then kept going. They were literally stepping out in front of the Mafia and arguing what they were doing was wrong publically.

Something else I wanted to analyze was that even though Peppino got so many warnings that what he was doing would kill him, he never seemed to care. I think this is because Peppino knew his death would prove his point and get people fighting and talking more. I also think part of him did want to be a hero. He wanted to save everyone like his brother said. So he was being selfish in that sense. He was okay with getting killed at some point because he wanted to get killed for his cause. Even though it would hurt his mother, brother, and friends. He also didn't care his father was at risk because it meant he was making a difference. I didn't really like Peppino because of that. I felt like the whole movie he only cared about himself and what he was doing, he didn't care how it was affecting his family, his father, or brother.

I also enjoyed getting clips from when he was younger at the beginning of the movie. I think this showed that initially, he was very close with his family. He read poems to them and enjoyed being part of what the family was doing. "He had great promise". But when his uncle dies, it changes everything for him. His family wouldn't give him answers so he goes out looking for them. This is where he finds out too how selfish his family is. His family wanted power however they could get it, which usually meant killing people. He didn't want to be part of something like that so he started revolting with the painter. I also thought it was ironic that when he was young and the painter was protesting about the airport, he made a comment directly to Peppino. Then Peppino eventually becomes his protege, I thought that was some good foreshadowing.
