I cento passi - Marwa Aarab

"I cento passi" is a great exploration of the intricate connection between mafia culture, communism and Italy's socio-political climate. Rather than portraying the mafia as a criminal group, it highlights its crucial influence on both individuals and society overall. Through the character Peppino's perspective, we are able to gain insight into deep-rooted histories of communist and mafia movements during politically active periods in Italy. Similarly, the movie "Best of youth" demonstrated a different communist group that was more violent and seemed different outcomes. However, both films utilized the same means to analyze these groups such as the broad landscapes to symbolize freedom, dialogue to lay the power dynamics between different characters (Giulia/Matteo and Tano/Peppino) as well as the strong performance of the protagonists which tends to have a unique high tone and expressive gestures.

In essence, Peppino's character holds crucial significance in the storyline, personifying resistance against mafia influence. The complexities of obedience and friendly bonds are revealed through his associations with both his father and friends as conflicting obligations that will later on influence his judgment. "I Cento Passi" cinematically symbolizes gradual progression towards dealing with oppressive forces such as those exercised by mafia. Thus, pushing the audience to adopt an empathetic outlook among communists who choose to challenge societal norms such as Peppino. The inclusion of a new plot element in the story shows an intense rivalry between two characters, Tano and Peppino. Although Tano represents mafia dominance, his willingness to participate in their corrupt activities implies he uses his authority to achieve what works best for him. On the other hand, Peppino challenges traditional norms by using his voice to present an entirely different definition of what it means to be virtuous under such circumstances all while challenging societal norms imposed by his mafia family. A turning point in Peppino's beliefs could also be the death of his uncle which was always deemed as a higher model in his family.

As this movie delves into complex ideologies concerning joining criminal organizations versus avoiding them at all costs. Viewers are faced with difficult ethical dilemmas while also trying to unpack each character's morals and beliefs regarding : family ties, authority, obedience and freedom of speech and affiliation. "I Cento Passi" explores the author's intimate experiences and sheds light on Italy's intricate political ideologies as well as its mafia movements, exposing society’s continuous efforts towards advancements within hard circumstances.
