One of the biggest things I got from this movie was the theme of standing up for what you believe in. The movie starts with Peppino's childhood for a reason. It shows where the flame for his hatred of the Mafia started, as he watched his uncle be killed by "friends". Throughout Peppino's whole life, we see him speaking his truth and never backing down from authority until the day he dies. This can be seen as a great characteristic to have, but at what cost does rebelling becomes too far. I understand that Peppino was ready to be a martyr and die for the cause, but it seemed like he never thought about how his actions were putting others who had no involvement in constant fear and danger. Throughout the movie we can see his father to be pulled in both directions, being part of/compliance with the mafia but also still wanting to love his son. He had trouble trying to do both. In addition, the scene with his brother, where his brother opens the door and yells out "Tano is the mafia" says he could be a hero, but instead, he chose his family. In this scene where his brother starts crying, the audience sees the pain Peppino has put their family through for his causes to be heard.
Another interesting topic in the movie was the parallel between Tano and Peppino. Although they were complete opposites, when looking at the two there were some very similar characteristics between them. Throughout the whole movie, Peppino rises to the top of his group, where he is followed by his friends for his charismatic behavior. Peppino throughout had magnificent power of influence, and that is shown through his radio station. The effects of the radio are shown after his death during the march, where you can see the vast amount of people Peppino had influenced. Tano is also portrayed as a leader, and you can see his influence through the physical power that he has. When looking at the two characters they both can influence and lead others. Despite being polar opposites, both characters show similar influential and leadership qualities, that are demonstrated by their significant influence of those around them.
