I Cento Passi - Sam Epstein

To be honest, I didn't like the movie I Cento Passi that much. I overall didn't think the movie brought anything new or interesting that Best of Youth didn't already do, which makes the film pretty boring. The main ideology of Peppino (and therefore the main theme of the film) is just that the mafia is bad, which is a pretty lame theme in my opinion. I also think that Peppino's character is never really trying to accomplish anything. All he did for the whole film was make a public fool of himself and his family just to end up killing his father and himself with no real world change occuring. What even is his final goal? Is it to raise awareness surrounding the mafia, of which everyone already is aware? Or is it to end the mafia? And how would he accomplish that? And even if he did he would also need to reform government and society at all levels to ensure a new mafia would not fill the vacated spot. Did he even have a final goal in the first place? Or did he just want to parade around with his friends and act like he is making change in the world to atone for being born into the mafia? I get that it's a historical film, but regardless nothing about the film enticed me in the way that Best of Youth did. If I had to say, I think the most interesting thing about this movie was the character of Stefano Venuti, and I think it would have been more interesting to focus on the clashing of his ideology and the mafia's, with Peppino being caught in the middle because he isn't sure what is right. Instead, Stefano does not get much screen time, and we get Peppino as our protagonist, who is selfish, obnoxious, and void of any real goals in life.
