I Cento Passi - Henry Cardinale

Considering the posts that I have made previously, I feel that continuing to make analysis of relationships is the best path to discuss the main plot elements of I Cento Passi. The film centers around Peppino Impastato's efforts to combat the influence of the mafia in his city of Cinisi, as he recognized the corruption around him. The main conflict of the film arises because Peppino's father Luigi is a member of the same mafia he is attempting to bring down, thus conflict arises between the two of them. Peppino's distaste for mafia activity came after his uncle was killed by another member of the mafia family, Tano Badalamenti, so that Tano could take over the organization. Peppino swore that he would never become a member of the mafia, and in his youth began writing about them in order to rouse his fellow man against their crimes. Given that his father was a member, however, this caused issues at home. Peppino and his father Luigi were dedicated to each other, but the fact that they both operated in organizations determined to take each other down wore on them, eventually leading to their separation and Luigi kicking Peppino out of their home. Considering the fact that the story of Peppino Impastato is true, I felt that the way the director represented the relationship between Peppino and Luigi was also representative of Peppino's internal struggle, attempting to reconcile his beliefs with the undeniable fact that he was himself related to the organization by blood. Peppino's struggle is decided for him after the mafia kills his father, and he doubles down on his efforts. Having lost two important members of his family to the mafia, he has nothing holding his mind back anymore, and his campaign of mafia slander continues with a renewed sense of purpose.

Overall, the film touches on a lot of the same themes and values of family and loyalty as Best of Youth did, and to its detriment by comparison, in a less complete way. However, I feel that this film still holds major significance and deserves to be viewed simply so that people know of the efforts of Peppino and his story and legacy are remembered.
