One thing I noticed in il postino was from the scene where Donna Rosa was upset with Beatrice about the poem she received from the postman. I thought that it showed how differently poetry can be received by different people. Beatrice read it as a love note from the postman who just wanted to express the beauty he noticed about her, but Donna Rosa thought it meant that he has seen her naked before. With pure intentions, Mario, the postman, wrote it as a way to attract Beatrice with what little knowledge he had about her and writing poems. Mario's favorite way to write poems was using metaphors to describe the world around him. The poet taught Mario about metaphors and how to use them properly, which was to his advantage in his small town because most people were illiterate and could not understand the poems he wrote. This makes his poems even more intimate because others in the town cannot relate or join in on Beatrice's and Mario's expression of love.
I feel like a plot hole in the movie was the amount of times Mario writes poems, it felt to me that when the poet left that Mario had less of a reason to write poems because we do not see him write a single one unless it was about the poet and communism. Why did Mario not continue to write his wife poems? I thought he would continue to give her more because he finally had Beatrice all to himself and truly loved her. Maybe I missed something in the movie but I felt that they should have shown him continuing his hobby with more poems to his wife.
The most impactful part I felt was when one of Mario's last actions was recording a poem and the sounds of the island he loved dear for the poet to show how much he cared about him and their friendship. It showed Mario's character and how deep his loved runs with the people he encountered in his life. Even with his wife, he took good care of her and made sure she was well taken care of.
