Il Postino- Ella Ohrvall

One thing I noticed in the last scene was the poet standing on the beach after discovering that the postman was dead. I thought this showed a pessimistic viewpoint of the movie. I showed how small the poet is compared to the water and the cliffs. It shows that even a famous poet who is so well known in society and so famous still can only make a small difference through his poems. he is still just a normal guy and a bunch of people need to do something to make a change. You can also see the pessimistic viewpoint through the mailman. He spent his whole life not wanting to be a fisherman and was barely able to read. He finally finds poems and starts to give power to his life. Even the postman though wasn't able to solve anything. He dies. It shows that no problem can just be solved by anyone. However, I could see how people can see the optimistic view, that someone who comes from such a small town where most people are illiterate can find a way to have views. He finds a way to be powerful, find a wife, and have a kid.

I think there were some plot holes, the first being that I felt like the family aspect was a little choppy. He meets Beatrice and instantly declares he is in love. Then we see him on a beach with her and just hear her talking about the poems. Then they are married and she is pregnant. I wish there were more scenes explaining their relationship. I also was confused by when he said they needed to move because no one understood them, but we didn't see why people didn't understand Beatrice. I also wish we saw more scenes explaining Di Cosimo, I understand he was the bad guy. But we only saw three or four scenes with him in it, I felt like it would have shown the opposing view more if we had seen more scenes with him in it.

Lastly, I thought it was really impactful when he claims that poems do not belong to those who write them, but to those who need them. I think it shows that poems are not made for the creator but to make an impact on the reader. This also relates to how he says he won't explain the poems to him in any other way than what it was written, it can only be explained but how it make you feel. This shows that the poems are for the readers, and they interpret them with what they need at the moment and what relates to them. Everyone can relate to people because each person is going to interpret it differently. Poems arent meant to be explained but meant to be felt. Which I think gives the postman power, he feels through poems and realizes he can have power.
