One of the biggest questions posed about this movie that I disagreed with was how realistic the movie was. Francesca and other students believed that it was the most realistic movie that we have seen yet. I do not think that it was realistic. This could partly be related to the fact that the movie is outdated or because I am not very familiar with poetry and such. I do not think that someone as famous as the poet would give the time of day to his mailman, let alone make that the largest part of his life. Yes there are stories of famous people giving time out of their day to serve others, but rarely do famous people let normal people influence their whole life. It was very realistic that the poet was being short to Mario in the start of the movie. The scene that I am referring to is the one where the poet signed Mario's book and didn't make it personalized. Mario was very frustrated and the poet obviously didn't think anything of this. Mario then proceeding to ask the poet for help with a girl and the poet dropping everything that he is doing to go into the town and sit with Mario and write is not very believable. I also find it very hard to believe that someone like Mario could get a really good looking female to fall in love with him over poetry. I think a major reason for my disbelief is the fact that poetry is foreign to me.
The role of women has come up again in this movie. This movie offers a new point of view of women. Beatrice's mom shows a lot of independence being the only parent to Beatrice. She is protective of Beatrice and being a widow, she goes to the priest when she needs a man to talk with. She is also the person running the restaurant/bar which is unusual of women in Italy. Usually the man works and is the main provider of money to the household.
