Il Postino Reflection - Aaron Trinidad

Overall, I enjoyed watching this movie and the messages associated with it. What I loved the most was the value the movie places on literature, specifically poems. It was wonderful to see how poetry could spark love, friendship, and even hope within a town that has been forgotten for so long. It is what gave Mario more purpose and to be understood for how he stood out from the traditional male role within the town. It was also nice to see that it gave him another way to express himself despite him already being able to read and write which most of the town was not capable of. It gave an already beautiful town its beauty back and while most of the town could not understand it it was seen through the characters like Mario and Beatrice.

I think the biggest reason why this movie will stay popular throughout the years is because of the state in which literature has been. As time has gone on and technology has progressed fewer young people are reading and seeing the value of literature beyond its use in the classroom. More and more people want information to be told to them quickly or through things such as videos and TikTok when you cannot truly synthesize everything a writer puts in their craft. That is why I liked what Pablo said about not being able to describe his poems in any other way than the way he originally wrote them. Yes, it can be summarized to get the main topic or theme but there is so much subtext and smaller things that people miss by doing that. On top of that, a lot of works are being banned in certain places and not enough people are caring about it. There is value in literature and it is what holds the key to many answers we hold today. As Mario said, poetry belongs to the people who need it and that is why they live on for so long. Despite any progress made in society, each generation must face the fundamental questions of life.
