il postino review- Dom Turner

There are a lot of things I took away from this film. After watching the movie the ending made me think that director took a more optimistic approach to the overall theme of the movie. Throughout the whole movie, you can see the growth of Mario becoming the man he wants to be. At the beginning of the movie, it seems that Mario's path in life is already made up, he was going to live just as every other man on the island and be a fisherman. He was able to challenge the stereotypes of being a fisherman and not being able to read or write. Mario was not able to become the man he was by himself, the character of Pablo helps him grow and introduces him to the concept of literature, specifically poetry. Being a mailman Mario did not make a lot of money, but that does not bother him. His whole life he had grown up poor and was not looking for much more other than to find love and be a better man. The two can bond and build a relationship, day by day through the curiosity of Mario. Mario learns to love poetry and it helps him find and connect with the love of his life Beatrice. When Mario and Beatrice got married, I saw this as a turning point in the movie. All of the scenes where Pablo is talking poetry with Mario, and helping him see the world for what it is, leads up to him finally marrying his love. Which is shown as his primary goal at the beginning part of the movie.

After they are married the audience sees Mario gaining confidence and forming his own political opinions. The effects of his time with Pablo start to show through his actions and dialogue with Mario. Besides poetry, Pablo taught Mario, the important life lesson, to fight for what you believe in. This idea of fighting for what you believe in is shown in the final scenes. When analyzing the death of Mario, it shows that he died doing what he loved. He was protesting for his causes while attempting to share his poetry. He was trying to move people with his work, the same way Pablo's poetry moved Mario.
