Il Postino Review - Meadow Gray

The movie that we watched in class today was my favorite so far. What contributed most to my enjoyment of the film was the setting. The setting of a small Italian island holds a lifestyle that I was unaware of or did not know very well. Throughout the films, we see many scenes of the ocean, fishermen, and old architecture of the island, which all point to a very close-knit community that leads a simple life. The film begins with Mario’s pessimistic view of the island being stuck in the past and overly simple. As the film progresses and Mario becomes more enamored by poetry through his friendship with Pablo we see his views of the island drastically changing. Mario begins to see the beauty of his home which enables him to reflect and commemorate his home. This shift as I said before is a result of him being exposed to poetry which I interpreted as a space away from reality or a new way to explain our reality. How the movie is filmed it seems that poetry and life are analogous. Just as poetry holds deep symbolic meaning, so does life and both can also hold great impact over time.

The ending of the film felt very solemn with a slight sense of happiness as Pablo is on the beach. While watching him I wondered what he was thinking, I imagine he was contemplating his time on the island and Mario. The tone the film ends on led me to contemplate life and what we have to make of it. Mario showed exemplary development as a man who stood for what he believed in while poetically expressing himself. Mario made his life what he wanted of it once he found meaning, love, and friendship through poetry. From the film I took away that in life, you should expand your worldview and lead in your own way.
