Il Postino was a moving film that really touched on how important poetry can be to people. it taught me, someone who is an English major, why we have books while we have the and why we need to read those things. Our discussion reminded me of a film I watched history class which brought us to the discussion that even with history, people can have different interpretations of things. It is beautiful seeing how many different interpretations can be made just from one thing. I agree with Pablo when he says that we shouldn’t have to explain it. That opens up space for communication and connection, even if there is disagreement, we learn from it.
I loved how optimistic Mario was on life, the world, Italy everything really. He just wanted everyone to be okay and be treated nice fairly and equally. I think it was important to have Di Cosimo as antagonist because it drove home further values and ideals that Mario had and also shared with the poet. I think also if Di Cosimo wasn’t in the film they wouldn’t have been as big of a drive for Mario to protest for the communist party, he would have lived to see his son. I believe that his character was the message that people should be optimistic and try to find the good things in life even when everything seems so bad.
I think if the movie would’ve gone further, I would wish to see Pablo come back and almost be like a grandfatherly person to Pablito. That would’ve been a good way to show how much of an impact Mario had on Pablo just as much as Pablo had on Mario. I also think that it would be a way to prove that Beatrice and her Aunt also meant something to him too.I think overall the film’s optimistic even though it was sad with Mario passing. I really did see the ending scene as being that there is more to come is very colorful. The music was more of a happy tone, and the sea was where Pablo found peace.
