Throughout this movie, I really enjoyed the use of flashbacks as a tool to not only move the plot but also to establish motivations and backgrounds for the three main characters. The flashbacks seen throughout the movie are memories of the characters that somehow relate to the current scene. This could either be through them feeling similar things to what they did in the memory, or actions that take place that serve as a reminder of their earlier years. The memories of the characters really help us as the audience make informed decisions about each character because they give us the required context to do so. By showing us particular moments earlier on in the characters’ lives, we can understand why they may do something. Without this context, many of the actions of the characters would seem hollow, which would make the movie pointless. For example, if we hadn’t seen all of the times Bruno had been whisked away to some random place with his mother, or taken back by his father, we wouldn’t understand his desire to escape/run away from all of his problems. As an audience, we would be left confused because we wouldn’t understand what would make him do something like that. Another great example comes at the very start, where we come to learn that Bruno is not in contact with any of his family members. Without context, it just seems like Bruno does not care about his family at all and would rather be rid of them than have to talk to them. However, with context, we come to understand that Bruno simply does not know how to talk to them because of all of the things that happened in the past. We understand that Bruno does not want those bad memories from his childhood years to come back and haunt him. This is also why Bruno relies on substances, another thing we wouldn’t understand without the memories. He needs some way to help himself escape from his past because he does not know another way to get away from it. Overall, this movie was quite sad, but had a very compelling plot line, very much due to the memories of the characters.
