The first thing I wanted to talk about was I did not think this was a comedy. I didn't laugh at all during the movie and I thought it was too realistic to be considered a comedy. I think some of Anna's actions could be interpreted as funny but overall I felt like it wasn't. However, I did have a happy ending with him giving up drugs and going swimming with his girlfriend so I will give the movie that.
I really enjoyed this movie, it was different than your stereotypical movie. It showed a lot of childhood trauma and how the adults were affected by it when they grew up. I think there is beauty in revealing the true nature of people's lives, and that not everything gets resolved in the end. I could see why people don't like it sense there isn't a lot of dialogue from Bruno, but I also think that's why this movie is so great. The flashbacks give some explanation that we are lacking in the dialogue. I also think it shows just how hard family problems are to talk about, he was dealing with some much that he didn't know how to express it, which might have been why he turned to drugs as a coping mechanism.
I think Bruno was so different then Valeria because of their age difference. Bruno is very observant and was older when a lot of the moving, and kidnapping was going on. He also saw more of Anna's sexual partners and noticed the abuse as well. He experienced a lot more trauma than Valeria because he had an older age. So then he always felt like he had to protect Valeria. whereas Valeria was very young so she didn't notice a lot of the abuse, moving also probably felt like an adventure that she didn't understand. She easily was lied to by Anna so Valeria just never experienced as much trauma as Bruno. I think also part of the reason Bruno keeps running away from his problems, is because growing up they always moved away. Problem with the father? moved away. Problem with the aunt? moved away. He didn'tcouldn't know how to stay anymore because he was so used to moving. It's also why he couldnt be alone with his mom when he was an adult, he didn't know how to face her and all the trauma she caused. But he also still loved her so he was battling a lot of emotions.
I also felt like it was okay if the characters were a little stagnant. In real life, you are not always going to have people who have these great realization moments at the end of their life and make huge changes. Most of the time people stay how they always were and don't change. So I actually enjoyed not seeing huge changes inlives the characters, it felt more relatable.
