When analyzing this movie, throughout the whole movie I was expecting a major change in the characters. However, throughout the whole movie, there is little character development in personality. The movie felt more like someone telling their personal experience, where others can relate to the plot. Rather than the movie being created for entertainment purposes. One of the main themes of this movie is to show the major effects that childhood trauma has on an individual's development into adulthood. We can see this with both Bruno and Valeria. Since the movie is shown from Bruno's perspective we get to look deeper into his experience firsthand. We see that Bruno had trouble connecting with his mother for all those years because growing up he was very observant of the situations they were in as a family. Although his mom would try and hide the things happening in her life, Bruno still knew. Compared to Valeria, Bruno protected her growing up, he was always the one seeing their mother getting hit or hearing the way people talked about her. We can see the effects this trauma has on Bruno still today. He is always having these constant flashbacks, where he is reminded of his brutal childhood. I think that is why we see Bruno contemplating or trying to do drugs. He found drugs as an escape from his past.
Another topic I analyzed in the movie was the meaning of love to the characters. The mother, Anna stood out to me. During the flashbacks we see how much she loves and cares for her children. However, when it comes to intimate relationships, she never really understood what love was. It seemed that anybody who showed her attention she would fall in love, but she never knew what true love was besides her children. This is because her whole life she was always the prettiest girl, and she always had men at her feet. When it came to needing a place or something done she was able to use her looks or body to get it done. It was sad to see her life as a continuous cycle of her being used just to get by.
