At face value, this movie was not produced with exaggerated highs and drastic lows, but I think with more of a purpose to get across underlying messages revolving around love, illness, and death with depth. The previous movie we watched, "Il Postino," had a very prominent poetic component. In our discussion, we talked about the role of poetry and what it can serve as. Extending from this, the concept was drawn that poetry is for open interpretation, and that different individuals can read the same poem, but come to a completely different understanding of the meaning. Similarly, I think that that was also a similar goal for this movie, "La Prima Cosa Bella" - not in the same poetic sense, but to paint the picture of a situation and have embedded meanings, or messages within, and to push the audience to interpret the storyline, what it may mean, and the complexities of love and death, but also how they can influence people.
I think that the role of love was very prominent - Anna's love for her children, her love for the men she came across - although I think that was more twisted love and showed the complexities as well as the potential negative view of love - but also the familial love, especially between the two siblings and Anna, even the father too though with not only Anna, but for his children as well. Thinking about specific scenes, I think it was a repeating message of love, especially familial love, being superior in hardship, but also in times of fear. This was very clear to me when the father experienced his first scare with his cardiac problem. During this time, he had written a letter to Anna disclosing his immense love for her, but also regret in how he treated her and not being together. In the letter, he then went on to say that as soon as he was out of the hospital, he wanted to be with her again. Another storyline that sent this same message was when Anna became very ill. Although has a family, they experienced immense turmoil, almost as soon as it was known she was sick to Bruno, he became present despite it initially being very challenging for him. Through this storyline, and during this time in the movie, the family was together the most since their childhood. They also worked together in comforting the mother, and furthermore, finding their second brother. Through this, they also had more conversations that addressed pain, especially Valeria as she confided in Bruno when Anna was very ill. These underlying messages to me, symbolized the strength of love in a family and that through hardship, beauty can arise, and it can move people to become more together, or further apart. In this movie specifically, hardship was shown to bring them back together in unity, and I found that to be of importance, but also beautiful.
