La Prima Cosa Bella is, in my opinion, not a good movie, nor is it worth watching. I think that this movie has a lot of wasted time in which no character developments are made. The beginning and end of the movie both have meaningful character development and are good, but the entire middle portion of the movie (which probably takes up around 75% of total screen time) could easily have been portrayed in the same way with a fraction of the time that it took up. The entire middle portion of the movie was just showing flashbacks from Bruno's childhood to his mom being a horrible mother and Bruno himself having little to no reaction other than just taking in the trauma of having a bad mom. There are at least 9 different flashbacks that occur, and to be honest I got the point after the first two. The only point is to show that Anna was a bad mother and that Bruno takes notice of it. That's it. Bruno doesn't even really react in any way, he just kind of lets it happen. He doesn't show anger or sadness or disgust, just nothing. Bruno's breaking point with his mother was interesting; he finally separated himself from her towards the end of his time in high school because she slept with one of his classmates. Bruno should have disassociated from his mom a long time ago, but it was still interesting to see him finally do it. Seeing his mother never change her behavior while being so inexplicably happy all the time, coupled with Bruno never having any real reaction to his mother's actions made the middle portion of the movie boring and frustrating. The beginning and end were good, and they featured the only two characters I really cared for: Bruno and his girlfriend. The beginning shows Bruno unhappy with his life and feeling that his girlfriend doesn't actually love him or that he doesn't deserve her. At the end, Bruno seems to sort of accept himself and his life, allowing him to live a happier, more fulfilling life with his girlfriend. Bruno is able to reach this point after his mom dies which frees him of this bond he never really desired. This development of Bruno as a character is good, but it's the only real development any character in the movie has, and the movie takes too long with too much repetition to accomplish it.
