La Prima Cosa Bella - Mae Crosby

La Prima Cosa Bella was a touching film for me. I think that its message about family, love, and regret is important. The thing it talks about with family is that no matter what, family is family. I think that mostly holds true, but I also think that it's okay if some family ever ends up being together and reconciling. I think it was good for Bruno to come back and see his mother and sister because he only had his girlfriend in the beginning and was struggling with that relationship. I think that he needed to rekindle the relationships with his mom and sister in order for him to understand his past and his family more, and to also take care of the relationships he has. Bruno brings his girlfriend to his mom’s wedding as well as her death day, and afterwards, he is seen happy with her again.

The family situation is interesting, and it isn’t one that you’d see in most Hollywood films. Those family relationships have their struggles and arguments, but I feel like most of them always end up happy and together again. While Bruno’s family was “broken” and had its problems, it took a lot for his sister and him to reconnect. The film took the viewers deep into Bruno’s past which let us inside as to why the relationships were broken. I think that because he was older, he understood what was happening and felt like he needed to protect his sister. Once he left, I think that her sister didn’t know much of what he knew and was ignorant to the choices that their mother was making because she was never told them in the first place. I’m glad that Bruno and Valeria were brought back together, but it is sad that it had to be because of their mother's illness.

The flashbacks were complex, but they also gave us a great back story. It was interesting to see how each event in the present day triggered a flashback from the past for Bruno. I think Bruno reflected on those flashbacks to try to understand why he was unhappy, and if there could have been anything he could have done differently to have a different outcome for the present. I also think those flashbacks are his guilt coming out and regret.

Overall, I’d give this film an 8/10. I like the story it tells and how it is told, but I almost wish there was a little more story about Anna even though it was Bruno’s story.
