It would be incorrect for me to say that this movie was enjoyable. This film evoked emotions of sadness, pity, confusion, and many other negative feelings. This was not necessarily a pleasant experience. However, this is a fantastic film. I do not believe in only limiting yourself to watching movies that you think are exciting, fulfilling, engaging, and have happy endings. Yes, this movie was depressing, but I saw it as an opportunity to witness the reality of some people's lives and how they continued living despite their hardships. If I only wanted to watch a movie that made me feel nice things, I would never learn that the events that took place in this movie actually happen to real people, and it affects them down to their very core. I think that the portrayal of Bruno's life was incredibly well-directed, especially with the flashbacks occurring throughout the entire movie. We see how traumatic events from his childhood formed him into the troubled and broken adult that he is, and to me, one of the lessons that this conveys is that you never know what another person is going through. Overall it made me sad that his mother had to be on her deathbed in order to draw him back to their family, but this is the reality of some situations. Families fall apart and fall back together under tragic circumstances sometimes, and that is depicted very clearly throughout this movie.
I was extremely interested in the character of Anna. I think that if you look at her actions after she and her husband separated, it's easy to judge her and sign her off as a selfish individual. However, I would argue against her being completely selfish. I do think that she made many decisions for herself in this movie, but she was also experiencing incredible hardships. Since we saw her story through Bruno’s perspective, we didn’t get to see how Anna was being treated by these men who we, as viewers, know were hurting her. However, each time that something tragic happened to Anna when she saw her children, she put on a smile and a show and always tried to cover up the horrors of her personal life. I think she’s someone who was just looking for love and, sadly for her, failing at every turn, but I do think that she tried to be a good mother who protected her kids the best that she could.
