The first part of the movie “The Best of Youth” introduces Georgia, an asylum patient struggling with mental health. Although a secondary character, I believe that she remains a very interesting and intriguing one, given her crucial role in shaping the Carati brothers’ journeys, especially Matteo’s. Indeed, Matteo noticed that Georgia was being electroshocked and decided to help her escape from the asylum. Since he and his brother were going on a trip to Norway, he decided to bring her with them so they could return Georgia to her family. Unfortunately, Georgia gets caught by two police officers and is probably taken back to the asylum. Following this event, Matteo found himself enveloped in a cloud of sadness, leading him to abandon his trip with Nicola and enlist in the army. I believe that his decision was narrowly linked to the frustration he may have developed after failing to look out for Georgia, but not only that. Earlier in the movie, we see that Matteo and his professor do not agree about some poets because of different beliefs. The professor said that the poet Matteo is defending is no great author given his bad relationship with his dad, which does not align with Christianity. This happened at a time when Italian politics and society were dominated by Christian Democracy. believe this decision was closely tied to his frustration, rooted not only in his inability to protect Georgia but also in earlier disagreements with his professor on poets due to differing beliefs. The professor criticized the poet Matteo supported, citing his troubled relationship with his father, which conflicted with Christian values prevalent in Italian politics and society at the time. Consequently, Matteo’s decision to join the army may have arisen from his frustration at not fitting into society. This frustration likely influenced his initial decision to help Georgia. I think that they did not get along, besides her challenging condition, because they shared similarities. Both Matteo and Georgia possess distinct worldviews. I think that enlisting in the army was a way of reconciling with his conflicting ideas for Matteo. Indeed, when he brought Georgia to her father, despite claiming mistreatment, her father insisted on her return to the asylum. This experience likely intensified Matteo’s frustration, as he may have felt that each one of his actions challenged societal norms. Despite believing he was doing the right thing, the outcome might not have been as he expected.
