Matteo feels a calling to help Giorgia, who is similar to him in how they are both odd. Although Georgia is mentally ill, and Matteo just has a temper, the two of them have trouble communicating when both argue. This temper comes back to haunt Matteo when he beats a civilian that hurt his friend Luigi. Matteo and Niccoli going separate ways and living two completely different lifestyles shows how outside influences can affect what we believe. Matteo is in the military, living the strict lifestyle and Niccolo is out doing whatever he wants without a worry in the world. This shows both sides of the political world which makes it interesting to watch. Another thing that I appreciate about the movie is how everything comes back and connects to something. Matteo and Niccolo keep bumping into each other and every time they become more and more different, but they are always family and have that root.
The movie depicts the schooling system as something that is unimportant for someones success. Sometimes its not always the smarter person who gets the better grade and I agree with that. Some of the smartest people that I know get poor grades and don't mind, similar to Matteo. I question whether the professor was right or not when he told Niccolo to leave Italy and that if he was going to study, to do it abroad. At this point int he movie it seemed bizarre for the professor to give a student an A and then tell him to leave the country, but it ended up proving to be true. Italy started to crumble after that, starting with the flood of Florence, then the other movements that were going against the police.
Part 2:
There has been a lot of character development with Nicola, Giulia, Giorgia and their parents. I do not think that Matteo has changed one bit. His whole life so far in the story he has never felt a part of anything or a sense of belonging. He is a good family man, and he only displays a sense of meaning towards Giorgia. The whole time I knew that Giorgia was going to come back into the story and have a connection with Matteo. I am looking forward to seeing what is next with them. Nicola has changed by coming back to his original self. Originally the liberal-activist lifestyle seemed very appealing to him, but after years with it and doing it with Guilia, he doesn't enjoy it anymore as it has escalated too much. A major turning point for Nicola was getting a daughter, and also cutting his hair and shaving his beard. When he was first living his "free" lifestyle, he said that he was done cutting his hair and beard. Giulia has developed for the worst. She was beaten and tied up in an asylum which has worsed her temper. I think that Giorgia has also developed for the worst. She seems lost and displayed emotions that foreshadowed her leaving. She wasn't cut out to be a mother and it showed. I think it is for the best for both her and Nicola that she left because their relationship was becoming toxic and Giorgia was not right for him. The major turning point for Giulia was her selling her piano. The parents have developed a lot because their fighting has stopped and they were being good grandparents to Sara. Nicola's father told him that fighting is good for strengthening and developing the relationship, but it proved to be the opposite for Nicola and Giorgia's relationship. The first time that the movie showed the two fighting, Giorgia yelled at Nicola saying that fighting had no purpose.
Part 3:
The movie came full circle and the emotions were high. I was not surprised by Matteo's decision to kill himself because throughout the whole story he seemed lost and kept living an isolated life. It started with Matteo throwing away his schooling when he failed his final exam at the start of the movie. This was very important to his mother and it foreshadowed the decisions to come by Matteo. Matteo then decided to join the military which for many young men can be a last resort option in life if everything else goes wrong. By isolating himself from his family and reality he becomes more lost in life. This then led to another last resort option for many young men: suicide. This is something that happens in America too and often times it is someone who was very gifted in school or something and they had been secretly hiding a lot of internal mental pain for a long time. The theme of family is what I would expect it to be because throughout the whole movie, Matteo and Nicola continuously run into each other and still have love for each other. Italians are very different than Americans in the sense that Italians have more pride in their family than Americans do. For Many Americans they will often put their friends before their family and believe that friends are better because you choose your friends but you didn't choose your family. The divorce rate in America is also really high. For Italians, family is first and this is something that I learned in my own life being an Italian American. You are raised that your siblings are your best friends and this is evident because even when Nicola and Matteo had been separated for long periods of time, they are still very close when they see each other. I believe that divorce not being allowed in Italy can cause many problems. Being a catholic like most Italians, it is said that when you marry someone, you commit to give your life to them. This can sometimes cause more pain than getting a divorce because sometimes people go crazy such as Giulia, and it is not good to have them around your kids as they are growing up.
I really like the character that Nicola developed into. Throughout the movie Nicola and Matteo complemented each other because they often were on two different sides for most things. Nicola has such a strong character by the end when he cares a lot about Matteo's son and decides to be a father figure for him at times.
