Momenti di Transcurabile Felicita - Arnulfo Mendoza

This film tries to provoke an emotional response from the viewer by showing what an average man in Italy who knows he is about to die does. However, the film fails at this due to the ending where the man does not actually die and the movie loses all emotional impact it otherwise would have had. It removes all tension from the movie and is frustrating to the viewer due to some plot inconsistencies at the end of the movie as well.

The entire film centers around the main character's belief that he is going to die in an hour and a half. It makes every small moment that may seem mundane on an average day into an impactful scene that might make the viewer think. Putting the main character in this situation where he knew he was going to die made everything in the film strike some type of emotional beat. Unfortunately this all goes out the window in the end where he narrowly avoids death. This takes away all the emotional appeal of the movie and all the tension that had built up and the rest of the movie becomes almost meaningless. One might argue that the movie still manages to deliver its message to the viewer which is true. On the other hand if you know how the movie ends it removes the potency in the movie. In my opinion a movie should be able to be watched twice and the viewer still have some of the same emotional experiences. This does not mean close calls in movies are bad in general because you know how the movie is going to go on a rewatch. You can still have close calls/positive twists as long as it does not rip all emotion from a particular scene or moment or perhaps the whole entire movie like this film did.

Another point of discussion is the massive plot oversight at the end of the film. The protagonist obviously does not want to die and gives his best efforts to not die. However, the old man who brought him back down from heaven stops him and makes him ride the motorcycle to his death. However, he avoids the crash and the old man just lets him go. This does not make a lot of sense and left me confused more than anything.
