This movie really made me think about every moment that I felt like I was wasting time, and if I was really wasting time. The railroad stop was the biggest one. The movie exaggerates this by Paolo breaking up with his girlfriend for a short period of time just because she lives behind the railroad crossing and he always got stuck. Although he was sitting in his car for awhile waiting, was he really wasting time? I do not think so. If he really loved her then it didn't matter how long he had to wait, it would have been worth it. I think that he was wasting more time by hooking up with other girls than his wife. It was funny when he met a new girl and was instantly in love with her not because he liked her, but because he liked the fact that she lived one minute away. This also comes up with how he rides his motorcycle recklessly. Yes he might save a minute from waiting for the light, but he is at such a high risk of losing his life that it is not worth it.
The theme of family is very important in this movie. The importance of family is the biggest difference between this movie being Italian vs American. In America, family is important but it in Italy, family is everything. This is shown because when Paolo is given an hour and 32 minutes left to live, his only concern is rebuilding the relationships that he has with his family. He doesn't care about hanging out with his friends, eating, or paying off debts. This shows how important his family is to him and I would have done the same thing as him. Whenever my family and friends both have something going on, I always choose being with my family as opposed to my friends.
The final question that this movie made me think about is what determines success? To me, I believe that money cannot buy you happiness, but it can avoid a lot of inconvenience. I want to retire my mom, send my kids to a catholic school and always make sure that I have enough money to take care of my family's needs. So to answer the question: Yes, I believe that money can contribute to my success. I think that some things trump money such as my relationships with my friends and family.
