Stylistically this movie wasn’t one of the favorites of the films we watched so far, but I did take away the important theme of life and living it to the fullest. This theme is represented throughout the movie with an Italian lens which centers the importance of life around family and relationships with people. I thought the film achieved this theme by implementing scenes that include waiting periods in life whether it be Paolo waiting for the train to pass or him waiting while his flowers are being prepared. Before his life-altering event, he was completely impatient and reluctant to do activities that involved waiting which Paola saw as mundane. But after the accident, he can see the beauty in those moments, whether it be having a conversation with his wife, children, or whomever he might be with in those moments. The theme of living and being happy was also shown through his use of technology throughout the film, before the accident he was constantly on his phone, most likely talking to other women which led him to give little attention to his wife and children. But after the event, he can put his phone down and be with his family. Paolo’s ability to change by the end of the film is very heartwarming to see he went from being uninterested and angry about his current situation to happy and thankful for what he has. It only took a near-death experience to make this shift which seems very drastic but it is often a reality for many adults. In connection to the other films we have seen some adult characters just do not change or continue to make the same decisions, but Paolo is given a second chance and can change which pushes the message of the movie forward.
