Smetto Quando Voglia Review - Meadow Gray

Smetto Quando Voglio was a very smart and successful comedy pointing out the corruption within the higher education system of Italy. It was well delivered through the exacerbated circumstances of college graduates whose academic superiority does not get them to the point in life they expected. Which leaves educated men to resort to drugs using their academic expertise. The plot is very comical with very original and relatable characters as they navigate newfound wealth and new use of their skills gained in college. But the ending shows their empire crumbling as they partake in new and old jobs that will continue the same lower-middle-class lifestyle that they endured at the beginning of the movie. This movie could’ve easily been created as a drama but the use of comedy hit the main point of the film in a very effective way. Comedy organizes the film in a way that makes light of the dark reality that professors face in which they are reliant upon public funding for their research, which they are most likely unable to get due to political tensions. The film not only analyzes and critiques higher academia in Italy but also provides an analysis of drug dealers and drug cartels' perspectives and offers an opportunity to hold empathy for these groups. While comedy is supposed to make you laugh at the ridiculous situations the characters place themselves in, it offers a critical analysis of real-world conflicts. The beauty of comedy specifically satires is that it offers a critical lens for viewers to contemplate and understand the implications and structures of our real world.
