Smetto Quando Voglio - Maria Loudyi

The film "I Can Quit Whenever I Want" presents a thought-provoking perspective on the influence of morality and ethics in driving human choices. The protagonist, Pietro, initially portrayed as a meritorious character with a successful career as a chemist, faces an unexpected turn when his university lacks the funds to support his research. Faced with financial challenges, including unpaid fees from tutoring, Pietro reaches a crossroads, leading him and his friends to undertake the fabrication and sale of a psychotropic substance.

This narrative made me wonder about the expectations placed on individuals to make ethical decisions within a dysfunctional system. Human beings are inherently driven by survival instincts, and in the face of a system that seems to fail to provide support, the significance of morality and ethics declines as individuals will always prioritize survival and stability.

Northern Morocco, particularly in the Rif region, where cannabis cultivation was widespread despite being illegal until 2021, illustrates how people resorted to such activities as a means of securing basic necessities. The government's awareness of this phenomenon, and its choice to overlook it, recognizes the desperate circumstances that drive individuals to engage in illegal activities for survival.

While the film humorously addresses societal issues in Italy, such as the financial crisis and the diminishing prestige of university titles in the workplace, comparing these situations emphasizes the crucial role of government and institutions in maintaining order and preventing the escalation of illegal activities with potentially detrimental consequences.

This highlights the significance of comedy in addressing complex topics, providing a more relaxed environment for discussions on serious and sensitive matters. Comedy, unlike history books, can uniquely address taboos, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of diverse perspectives. Finally, the film and real-life examples highlight the importance of effective governance and societal support systems in reducing the encouragement of illegal activities driven by desperate circumstances.
