Welcome to the South Review - Dom Turner

One of the most highlighted "problems" in this movie is the stereotypes addressed between northern and southern Italy. I think this movie does a great job of highlighting this part of Italian culture. At the beginning of the movie, we see Alberto and his wife listing all of the problems with the South. They say it's violent, too hot, diseases start there, and just overall a horrible place to be. When he is leaving for the first time he packs a fire extinguisher, and rat traps, and even wears a bulletproof vest. Although these stereotypes can seem hurtful to those from the South, I do not think anybody should be offended. The director did a great job, of using comedic relief when addressing the stereotypes. By the end of the film, many of these stereotypes are proven to be false. Watching the movie there are still very distinct differences between the north and south. I noticed the north is more fast-paced and work is more professional. Whereas life in the South is slower paces, everybody knows each other, and their dialect uses more slang. Changing many of Alberto's preconceived ideas of the south.

I think there are many examples in this movie where we see the characters are, "working to live not working for money". In a big city like Milan, it is so fast-paced, and more professional due to the need to make money. In the South, they were more just living their quiet life. You can see this when they are coming into work at 9, taking a 3-hour lunch break, playing soccer during work, and sitting down for coffee or fruit juice as Mattia delivers mail. This movie highlights the contrast in lifestyles between Northern and Southern Italy.

Throughout the movie, we see a relationship between Alberto and Mattia form. Although the age difference, the two character's personalities can complement each other well. Alberto is faced with the conflict of owning up to his lies, and Mattia needing to gain the confidence to talk to his mother about Maria. These two were able to form a connection between each other. Although facing different challenges they ultimately needed each other to overcome their problems.
