There’s a lot of emotion right at the beginning of the movie between Matteo and his father. It looks like his father wants to help Matteo and Matteo shuts him off and doesn’t want much to do with him. It seems like his father is trying to get Matteo out of his shell and wants to peruse a connection with him especially before he leaves for his trip. Matteo seems to be more focused on his work and his job more than creating a relationship with his parents. His brother Nicola has more of an extroverted personality and handles situations more maturely. Matteo seems to have the smarts in his family whole Nicola is more well spoken. Both brothers seem to want to help others in the beginning of the movie. Their motivation to help Giorgia is what leads them in different directions. Nicola seems to get more of a perspective of different parts of life. His character shows a more gloomy side in the beginning and then once he gets the good grade his perspective of life his happy and more optimistic. He really comes out of his shell going on the trip by himself and experiencing different emotions and problems. He isn’t afraid to take on a challenge that comes his way. I think it’s opposite for Matteo as he is more in his shell the whole movie. Especially with his family and what his plans for the future are. After he lost Giorgia he went straight into the Army and I feel like he didn’t deal with his emotions and feelings. We also see this when he is helping clean up after the flood and he picks up the paper in the water, he gets more emotional in that moment, but once his Sargent yells to them to keep moving he becomes straight faced and doesn’t react much. Matteo is definitely more closed minded than Nicola is, but I feel like the relationship between both of them grew stronger as they were further apart. They don’t shy away from telling one another the truth and they respect one another’s decisions. I think it will be a challenge for Nicola as the movie goes on to get along with Giulia. Their personalities are different from one another and I think it’ll be interesting how it plays out.
Part 2:
I think a big topic right now is character development. In my opinion Matteo has not fully developed from the opportunities he has been given. Matteo has reacted aggressively and angrily toward many different situations throughout the movie and continuously. Even Giorgia commented to him how he was mad, angry and crazy. Matteo has had the opportunity to develop as he goes away to the Army, his father passing, starts a new life, meets a women. His action has been the same throughout this movie and resorts to the same characteristics from the beginning. Something seems to be holding Matteo back from fully developing as a character and show his true self. Nicola on the other hand I feel has developed in many different ways but has also come back to his old self. As Nicola travels, meets new women, new people, and has a child he transforms from being so crazy and wild to a more calm cool and collective individual. He feels free and happy when he is traveling around Europe. His character then develops again as he meets his girlfriend/wife and has a child with her. He seems to be more loving and caring for others around him. Nicola has always been loving and caring but I believe this part of the movie really brought that out of him and showed us his true colors. Once Guilia left Nicola he switched his mood instantly and changed into the characteristics Matteo shows. It is interesting to see how similar both Nicola and Matteo are.
