The side characters in the movie help develop the main characters personality throughout the first part of the film. Nicola's friends help both Nicola and Matteo have fun away from home. They also encourage Nicola to do well on his exams and support him during them. When Matteo meets Giorgia, he at first is impatient and angry with her, as he is with most people, but the longer he spends time with her the more patient and understanding he becomes. He starts to calm down and not yell when she doesn't answer and gives her time to respond rather than lash out. He also grows to understand what she means when she uses her hands to communicate instead of her voice. He cared for her, because if he didn't he would not have brought her along or made sure not to leave her with her father. When Matteo and Nicola split up, Matteo meets Luigi who becomes a good friend to him. With this friend, Matteo becomes happier, which causes him to loosen up around Luigi. After meeting back up with Nicola in Florence, the change in character is noticeable. Yet still hostile, Matteo is proud to introduce his new friend to his brother, someone who changed him for the better and made Matteo feel less alone in the Army. Having a friend is important, especially when they are the only one you have and you can share everything with them. Matteo now has this friend, which makes him communicate with Nicola less. By communicating less with Nicola and more with Luigi, Matteo and Nicola grow apart. They still love each other and will stick by the others side, but as the police start attacking people in the streets, the brothers are on two different sides, yet Matteo has a friend on his side that understands why they do what they do. During the time Matteo joins the army, Nicola travels to Norway. Along the way he meets people more like him who are outgoing and free. Those around him influence his perspective on the world, causing him to understand multiple points of view and not just his own. Giulia, Nicola's wife, shares the same perspective as Nicola during the police raids. Because of their shared views, they are able to connect and understand each others perspective which is something Matteo is unable to do. All the side characters help the main two characters have fun and enjoy themselves throughout the film and develop their personalities as they grow older.
