Best of Youth Pt. 1

One aspect of the movie  that stuck out to me so far is the overarching theme of brotherhood that connects Matteo and Nicola over and over again despite how distant they are. The idea that no matter how different they are and how far apart their paths in life take them and how infrequently they see each other , they always seem to be able to come together. They seem to be on opposite sides of major historical events but are also reunited by them as well. For example, Matteo who is a cop is called to help quell the student protests happening. On the other hand, Nicola is part of the protests alongside his girlfriend Giulia. After the protest events end, Matteo and Nicola still come together and have a civil conversation and still treat each other like brothers. On the other hand, when Giulia learns about Matteo's friend Luigi getting seriously injured, they argue and she storms off. Without a pre-existing connection, they lack the mutual respect that the brother share.  Overall, I think what this shows is that the theme of brotherhood will be present throughout the movie and it will be shown by them reuniting peacefully despite being on the opposite sides of major historical events like the student protests and the flood of florence.

One criticism that I have is the inclusion of Giorgia as a character. I understand that she was used as a plot device to set the stage for the movie during the time they are in the university, but afterwards she becomes largely irrelevant.  Maybe she will become important later as I have not seen the rest of the movie, but in my opinion, they could have excluded her from the movie if they were going to end her role so suddenly. The way they wrote her off the story was kind of a cop out and not well executed. The way those random police officers take her while she is buying ice scream didn’t feel right to me for some reason. Overall, I think Giorgia's character should have played a bigger role in later parts of the film and the manner in which she is removed from the story made her an underwhelming character that had more potential in my opinion.
