I felt like this was one of the best movies we have watched in this class so far. I was engaged the entire time and felt like this movie showed a very accurate depiction of reality for a lot of people. Especially those in Italy before getting a divorce was legal. One decision that I thought was really nice was not ending the movie in a very happy circumstance. I thought that that made it a lot more realistic. While each character grew and healed a bit there was no complete 180. These situations are so hard on families and there is never any one way of doing things. While my heart goes out to Bruno and his sister for the trauma they had to endure I feel a lot of sympathy for their mother which some people may disagree with. Not knowing her story makes it harder to give grace but I truly believe that she has gone through something that has influenced the way she thinks and provides. She went into a very difficult relationship where abuse was something she put up with because she loved their father so much. However, when it was too much she had to protect her kids and leave.
This is where I think people began to place blame on her but she had no support not even from her family. In addition to that, I think that all men or the world ever saw in her was her beauty. They never wanted to see her beyond that and she subconsciously knew that. That's why she relied on that to provide for her children. Using her body and her looks was something she was good at not because she was not intelligent but because that is all her world ever reduced her to. Therefore, in a traumatic situation like that, I could understand that is what prompted her decisions. It gives her a bad look but what I see is a mother willing to do anything for her children. She knows what that means and she knows what that does to her psychologically. That's why when she was dying some may say she was a little delusional or living in her own world but I think that was a coping mechanism for her for all she had to endure. Imagine having to go through one of the worst scenarios with your children and knowing that your best will never be enough but still doing it because you care. Then, since your children endure this trauma and they do not know how to cope they turn away from you because you are a reminder. What are you supposed to do then? You'll always love them but you can't force them to be around you so you endure the pain of that as well.
I think their mother was a very strong woman who endured things that people could not imagine. I applaud the creators of the movie for keeping it real because who really wins in these situations?
