Perfect Strangers was a film that did a great job using symbolism in order to convey a theme to the viewer of the film. It conveys the theme that the line between what is private information about our lives is currently being blurred with what is private information about our lives due to the increased presence of cell phones in the average human's life. It is making a comment about how in today's society that your entire personal life and secrets are stored inside your phone.
While this is a somewhat reasonable sentiment to have because of the clear lack of privacy we have in society today, however I think that this movie blows it out of proportion in order to try and stir outrage over cell phones in order to have the film do better in the box office. The reality is that everyone controls what they share and don't share with cell phone companies for the most part. There are some sacrifices in terms of privacy that you have to make in order to use a cell phone which is needed in today's society but for the most part it is within your control what you want happening on your phone. It is not some sort of black hole that sucks in every detail about your life like the movie is trying to make it out to be. However many people don't do this and what is private and personal information ends up becoming a hazy situation.
This phenomenon is symbolized in the movie by the eclipse. As the stages of the eclipse progress more and more things are revealed about the characters lives. This is the most compelling part of the movie to me and it is a nice overarching symbol that connects the different aspects that the film tries to comment on. There are many different impacts to technology in our lives, many of them positive which is why we as humans use those things. They make our lives easier and better in some ways. However this film raises some serious questions about the consequences of those things and delivers a compelling call to action onto the viewer to treat the information in your device like it is being watched by everyone you care about at all times.
