The importance of comedy to humans cannot be understated. Comedy is the most successful way for us as a society to discuss hot-button issues and avoid criticism for doing so. The lack of discussion on tough topics has become a serious issue across the globe, and the best way to solve this is to find a means to skirt criticism of ideas. The best way to skirt outright criticism is to find ways to hide the discussion of hot-button issues within a larger work, preferably something humorous. We can see this throughout the film, Smetto Quando Voglio. This film takes a story about a “gang” of scientists who create a party drug and use it to discuss the issues within the Italian education/employment system. All of the men involved were geniuses who stooped to the level of dealing drugs because they could not get jobs in their selected fields. While it is not necessarily discussed outright, except for the initial scenes of Pietro teaching, it is constantly referenced throughout the movie that all these men were on track to do great things before getting kicked to the curb. This is meant to highlight the issues with early specialization seen in Italy. By narrowing down job options before even going to high school, you leave almost no opportunity for a change in path or a chance at success in another field if the one you are in does not work out. While it is highly hyperbolized, the men turning to illegal actions and making millions of euros provides us with a valuable lesson and brings light to a hot-button issue that may never get touched on in a discussion. Not only was watching this movie productive for the above reasons, but it was also very enjoyable to watch. It was entertaining to watch the dichotomy of Pietro, where he would deal drugs and then try and convince his wife he was still a professor. It was also nice to see how he had good intentions and kept his morals to some extent. Obviously, he did not want his life to come to making and dealing drugs, but he did it in the best ethical way he could and only did it to protect his relationship and keep his wife happy.
