Smetto Quando Voglio- Ella Ohrvall

I think this movie demonstrated multiple themes. The first theme I noticed is that two wrongs don't make a right. In this movie Italy's academic situation is wrong, it doesn't allow people to get professions or get education properly. So then Pietro decides to sell drugs, which is wrong. He ends up in jail, which shows that trying to do the wrong thing to get ahead in the wrong society won't work. Another theme I noticed is that humans are perfect and they are just trying to do their best. Throughout the movie you see the main characters just try to survive in society with what they know how to do. So they are doing their best and come up with selling drugs, the problem is humans aren't perfect. So their system isn't flawless and they end up in a lot more trouble.

I think this comedy is successful because of a couple things. I think the way it educates people on how Italian society is important and very relatable to Italians. I also think yes, it pushes it to an extreme, but it almost feels like a plausible route people might have to take. Or in general turn to crime just to survive. I also think this comedy is successful because of the characters, the dynamic between book smarts and street smarts is very interesting to see play out in the movie. They are so smart intellectually and are smart enough to create drugs, but around other people, some of the other decisions they make are so dumb. I think people can relate to being book smart but not street smart, or street smart and not book smart. Comedy works because it is an educational tool that pushes things to the extreme. It also allows people to laugh. There is a difference between laughing at someone and laughing with someone. Comedy movies give you permission to just laugh and not have to worry about being mean.

I think another interesting dynamic is between Pietro and Guilia. Guilia drives everything Pietro does as a character. He lies to her in the beginning because he is worried about losing her. He decides to sell drugs so he can provide for her. He comes up with a huge plan to give sugar pills to save her. And he goes to jail and tries to stay there for her. Pietro is different then the other characters because for him it wasn't truly about the money, but making Guilia happy. For the other characters, it was solely about the money which is why they get so wrapped up in the penthouse and hookers, whereas Pietro goes home every night and keeps trying to repair his relationship.
