Smetto Quando Voglio Review

This film does a great job of taking the traditional ideas of what a drug dealer and the drug world looks like and subverting it. The real power comedy has to address such topics as desperation and turning to immoral means of work in an understated way is showcased in this film. We see major topics such as the Italian “Brain Drain,” addiction, and structural inequity and inefficiency which promote such decisions as those made by our protagonist. The unexpected and ridiculous nature of a person as highly educated as him needing to use his intelligence in this way would come across as a bit frightening due to the very real societal issues the plot hinges on, but the humor takes the weight off of exploring this topic and matching the realistic aspects with intense irony and clever perspectives. This film showcases the greatest strengths of comedy such as its ability to critique societal norms and issues and humanity at large. The fact we all live within these subjects and have a subconscious awareness of them sets up the audience to feel included on a baseline level with the rhetoric and making light of issues creates a launching point from which change or even acceptance can be born from. It creates a sort of secondary participation in the subjects and allows a cathartic opportunity to derive peace from things that are most daunting. Overall, this film creates a connection with the audience through humor and platforms more critical thought and personal evaluation of the subject matter.
